Looting and Food Riots

Like rent-resistance struggles, food disturbances pitted the poor against the rich. In most cases, however, the rich were not the direct targets of the hungry, who only wanted to appropriate part of their goods in order to stay alive. Food disturbances might, for instance, target landlords’ grain stocks, rice shops, boats carrying grain, even small amounts of food hidden by less deprived neighbors. Much more rarely, rioters invaded pawnshops or Buddhist monasteries in search of money and other valuables, which they then had to convert into food. In exceptional cases, they even attacked and burned large mill factories, and wounded or killed their guards.

The first thing then, when looking at food disturbances, is to distinguish between the very common cases of looting and the real food riots, which were quite rare.
